Old Brompton Road, London

An approximately 65sqm north facing back garden of a lower ground Georgian Maisonette on Old Brompton Road in Kensington & Chelsea, London. The existing garden is laid out over two levels covered in concrete pavers. Planting wise we have two fantastic mature cordylines and two tree ferns all mature and to be retained within the new design. Else from that the garden was neglected for some time and the new owners were keen to ge the garden up to the same standard as they have with the interiors, going through a full recent renovation working with design firm Speaking of Interiors

Whilst the garden is accessible from the lower ground bedrooms through some French doors, it is also visible from the living space above through three large windows overlooking the space making it a major feature of the overall living area. So visually it needs to work, not just whilst moving around the garden but also being viewed from the upper level of the house,

We were devised to create a new spillover space for the whole family, with a sizeable lawn, a dining area, a bespoke BBQ unit and a shed for storage all in a smaller and challenging garden. Taking inspiration from the interiors which has a vibrant South American influence and incorporating this in the textures and colours used in the planting as well as in the choice of hard landscaping. Deep rusty reds and oranges to yellow and khaki greens. Dark brown wood, terracotta tiles and brass fittings.

The finished design takes all of this in to consideration including the shaded and sunken aspect of the garden with regards to planting, lots of lush green foliage and tall surrounding brick walls covered in evergreen climbers with bursts of tropical colours throughout. Using stacked terracotta pavers, green zelige tiles as a worktop for the BBQ unit and a bespoke shed with weathered cedar shingles. Clever details that feel enticing even from a top plan view.
